Five of the seven league teams have at least a game behind them after Week 2 of play concluded. Tonawanda Jr. Braves were to host Rochester J-Hawks on May 23, but that game had to be postponed.
On May 23 the Seneca WarChiefs lowered their 2014 championship banner at SNI Cattaraugus Community Center before a season opening victory 17-8 over Onondaga Jr. Redhawks. Brandon Brooks (Seneca) and Levi Confer (Onondaga) were named players of the game.
Defending league champion WarChiefs opened the new season by scoring seven first period goals to take a 7-3 lead into the intermission. The teams settled some in the middle frame as Seneca took a 10-5 advantage heading into the final period.
2014 Montreal Junior Lacrosse League champ Vermont Jr. Voyageurs headed north to face Kanehsatake Jr. Warriors on Saturday. It was the opener for Vermont, who were a perfect 6-0 in the MJLL last season before sweeping through the league playoffs to capture the title.
A tightly contested game from the start, Vermont held a slim 4-3 advantage after one period. The teams traded goals throughout, but the Jr. Voyageurs scored the final goal as Carter Glenn netted the winner. Final score was 13-12.
Goal scoring leaders for Vermont were Logan Lamothe (4 G, 1 A), Luc Leblanc (3 G, 1 A) and Max Johnson (2 G, 2 A). Collin Orr and Glenn had five-point games as each scored a goal while adding four assists.
In the final game of the weekend Kanehsatake (1-2) picked up their first league win by dominating Montreal Jr. Shamrocks (1-1) at Bill Durnan Arena, winning 14-6. The teams had played a week previous with Montreal 8-6 victors, but several roster additions during the week have the Jr. Warriors much improved.
