The 2015 Founders’ Cup will come to a conclusion in Calgary with three medal round games scheduled today. After the round robin, where each team played their six tournament opponents, teams are sorted out. The final will be an all-First Nations Lacrosse Association affair as the top two teams, Akwesasne Indians (6-0) and Seneca WarChiefs (4-2) will meet in the Gold Medal game scheduled for 5:15 PM (MT) at Max Bell Centre.
FNJBLL champion Seneca needed some help from their opponent to earn their spot in the final game. The WarChiefs were cruising through the round robin, winning their opening four games. Their opening loss came at the tail end of a four-game marathon played in a 36-hour stretch, to the host Calgary Mountaineers. That put Calgary in position to earn the championship spot if they could defeat Akwesasne in the round robin finale. After a tightly contested opening 40 minutes the constant pressure put on by the Indians wore down the Mountaineers. Akwesasne outscored the home team 6-0 in the final period to win 12-7.
In their previous matchup, Akwesasne downed Seneca 17-8 when the Indians offense exploded for an eight-goal second period. In the final, Seneca will have to contain the Oakes brothers, Russ and Seth, who combined for eight goals in the first matchup. University at Albany standout goalie Blaze Riorden scored (yes, scored) four goals and added two assists in that game and was rested last night.
